Opera Mini Set to Change Web Browsing on iPhone

It’s been a week now since Opera Mini has been submitted to Apple officially by Opera Software ASA, but no sign yet at App Store. It’s said that this browser is 6 times faster than Safari for Mobile on iPhone as Opera Mini renders the pages at server-side. However, there’s no explanation yet by Opera Software ASA how much this Server-Side backed rendering is secure.

Opera Software ASA also claims that Opera Mini compresses data by up to 90 percent before sending it to the iPhone, resulting in rapid page loading and more Web per MB for the end-user. As we all know that browsing on iPhone using Safari is highly bandwidth intensive and often results in three digit monthly bills, Opera Mini for iPhone can be a big relief for people like us who use iPhone to browse the web on regular basis.

If you are not already excited by the possibility of saving on your bandwidth here is a round up of the cool features of Opera Mini for iPhone.

Features :

  • One tap to lay out text within the screen / One tap to Zoom In: Basically, on Safari for iPhone has double tap to zoom in and again double tap to zoom out. Whereas, Opera Mini has single tap to zoom in and there’s a separate key to zoom out.
  • Tabs in Opera Mini: Opera Mini has cool little bar which shows all the working tabs.
  • Speed Dial: This is Opera’s main feature, which you’ll find on almost all versions of their browser. So, now iPhone has it too.
  • Long tap on link to select ‘Open in New Tab’ or ‘Select Text’. On selection of ‘Select Text’, user can select the text and can ‘Search’ the selected text in Google Search right away or can also ‘Search With..’ to search with any Search engine of your wish.
  • ‘Find in Page’ most wanted feature by iPhone users as Safari for iPhone doesn’t have this. Which search for any given string on the Web page. (Like Ctrl+F for any desktop browsers on PC)
  • Opera Mini now comes with little HTML5 support too. Which mean we can expect awesome Google WebApps running on it too.
  • Save of State upon Quit of browser: It’s another most coveted feature for iPhone users. It’s basically gives the feeling of system responsiveness on user request. Whenever the user will quit Opera in between and load it back, they’ll find all their content available right there. Yeah, that’s right, the browser has it locally.

Unfortunately though, you cannot make a third party app as a default app for a particular task on your iPhone. So there’s no luck for those of you planning to make opera Mini your default browser.

With all these new features, do you think it’ll totally change the way you browse the web using your iPhone? Would it also have any effect on iPhone development? Share your thoughts in comments.
