You no more need someone’s phone number to make video calls, all you need is just an email address associated with the iPhone 4. Now iOS 4 beta 3 is offering the strongest evidence to have support for a email address as well in addition to the phone number to initiate a FaceTime video call in iPhone 4.

In near future the FaceTime technology will be incorporated into Apple’s iPod Touch and iPad as well. This could allow video chatting with other FaceTime-compatible devices like front camera iPod touch and iPad. Screenshot clearly shows setting (Under “Contacts” Option) that offers you with an option to add email address with the FaceTime functionality. Macrumors, who revealed this feature and is reporting that :
A new option in the iOS “Contacts” application allows users to make FaceTime calls using either a phone number or an email address. This would allow FaceTime compatibility with devices not associated with a phone number such as future camera-enabled iPads and iPod touches.
Those who don’t know, FaceTime is an embedded video calling application in iPhone 4 that is able to use either the front or back camera over a Wi-Fi connection to communicate with another iPhone 4. Currently, only iPhone 4 supports FaceTime but we have seen leaked iPod Touch 4 images that hints towards the possibility of front facing camera. If those, images turn out to be legit, then we might soon see FaceTime functionality on iPod Touch 4 and iPad as well.
We cannot say how strong these reports are and these claims can only be witnessed at Apple’s iPod and iTunes event, where iOS 4.1 for iPhone and iPod Touch and iOS 4 for iPad is widely expected to show up . It can also be said that iPhone application development is making a new move towards connecting users .
